Do-it-yourself plate painting is a creative activity that is accessible to both experienced and novice decorators. After all, the technique is very easy to master, does not require the purchase of expensive materials, waste of time and effort, so you do not have to be afraid of losing interest in the process. And hand-painting on glass and ceramics can become your permanent hobby, a method of relaxation, or even a hand-made business on Internet sites like the Crafts Fair or Etsy.

In this material we will look at the following methods and techniques for painting plates with your own hands, which are suitable for beginners:

  1. Painting using stencils and templates;
  2. Artistic hand painted plate;
  3. Stained glass painting.

Master class No. 1: chiseled plate painting

Dot painting of plates (pique or point to point) is a technique of drawing and creating contours with dots, thanks to which you can achieve the effect of chasing, inlay with stones, colored rhinestones or bead embroidery. In the photo below you can take note of successful combinations of colors and patterns (scroll the photo to the right).

Here are ideas for decorating bowls using the pique technique.

To work you will need:

  1. Cotton pads for degreasing and cotton swabs for correcting unsuccessful patterns;
  2. Ethyl alcohol, nail polish remover or special degreaser;
  3. Contour acrylic paints in the desired colors;
  4. Aerosol varnish to fix and protect the design;
  5. A needle and paper for cleaning tubes.

Adviсe:

  • If you want to use the plates according to their direct purpose, then choose baked acrylic paints labeled dishwasher ability or dishwasher resistant. Durable contour paints can be found in the Hobby Line brands Kreul, Decola, Marabu and Pebeo Vitrail.
  • The paints should not be too thick or too thin. You can check this in the following way: press on the tube - if the paint comes out easily, but in a puddle, then the consistency is too liquid; if it is difficult to squeeze out, then it is too thick. Before starting work, you need to test each tube, since different colors paints of the same type can have different consistencies.
  • You can make dots with a small thin brush, needle or toothpick, using acrylic ceramic paints in regular jars if you find painting from tubes difficult.

Drawing technique

The first thing you need to do is degrease the surface well with alcohol or a degreaser using a cotton pad and only then start getting creative. Experienced craftsmen can draw directly on the plate, without using any sketches or markings, inventing patterns right in the process of work. You too can trust the free flight of thoughts and improvise. But if you want to realize a certain artistic idea, then it is better to first draw a sketch, template, stencil or marking, thinking over the colors and patterns.

For painting on glass, it is convenient to use templates that can be glued to the back of the plate.

Tip for beginners: before painting a plate, practice placing small, medium and large dots on paper at the same distance from each other with the same pressure and pressure on the tube.

  • The main rules: in one line there must be points of the same size, and the same distance must be maintained between the points, and it is very important that it (the distance) be minimal, that is, such that the points are “readable”, but do not merge into a continuous outline ;
  • Remember that the larger the dots, the greater the distance between them can be. And vice versa, the smaller the points, the smaller the indentation from each other should be;
  • You need to draw according to the principle from general to specific, that is, starting with large contours and ending with drawing small details.

After work, the paint should harden. There are three ways to dry them:

  1. Naturally for 1 day - if you want to use the plate rarely or even use it only as a decorative item.
  2. Dry with a hairdryer, and then leave the paint to harden naturally for 10-12 hours.
  3. Bake at a temperature of 150-170 degrees for half an hour, and then, without removing from the oven, let the dishes cool - in case you want to eat from painted plates. It is advisable not to wash painted dishes for 20 days after firing - this way the paint will last longer.

After the paint on the decorative plate has dried, you can seal it with varnish.

Master class No. 2: painting plates using stencils and templates

Another method that anyone can master is painting dishes using stencils and templates.

To work you will need:

  1. Acrylic paints for glass and ceramics or felt-tip pens for painting dishes, which come in different colors and rod thicknesses. In Russia you can most often find markers from Marabu;
  2. Art synthetic brushes of suitable sizes (if necessary) or a sponge for tamping;
  3. Nail polish remover, alcohol or degreaser and cotton pads for degreasing;
  4. Everything you need to draw and cut out a stencil or template: paper, cutter, pencil.

Drawing technique

First, you need to draw or print a ready-made stencil/template yourself, and then use a utility knife to cut out the required holes. Perhaps, in this technique, only this stage can be called labor-intensive. Then everything is much simpler: degrease the surface and glue the template to the bottom with tape.

Then we paint over/stamp the design using the stencil. Then you can place accents on your picture, draw details or contours.

If you were drawing acrylic paints, then you can dry them naturally, with a hairdryer or in the oven according to the recommendations of the first master class on dot painting of plates.

Master class No. 3: Artistic painting by hand with brushes

Painting plates in the traditional way, that is, with brushes and paints, is The best way write a real masterpiece.

To work you will need:

  1. Art synthetic brushes of different shapes and sizes;
  2. Acrylic paints for glass and ceramics or water-based baked stained glass paints;
  • Tip: stained glass paints are more transparent and, at the same time, brighter, but they are a little more difficult to work with due to their liquid consistency and ability to spread over the surface, so they are often used in combination with contour paints that contain them. Also, keep in mind that solvent-based stained glass paints are not suitable for painting plates that will be used for their intended purpose.
  1. Any degreaser.

Drawing technique

First you need to write the underpainting, that is, draw large parts of the composition, which will be its basis. Next, add volume and depth to the design using dark and light colors. And then start drawing the details. At the end of the work, use the recommendations for fixing paint from the first master class.

Adviсe:

  • Mix paints and play with undertones to create unusual colors and effects.
  • Painting a ceramic plate with a matte glaze will be easier than painting on glossy ceramics or glass, since the paint will apply more densely and evenly.

These are simple, but interesting ideas for painting plates with brushes and acrylic paints with your own hands for beginner artists (scroll the photo to the right).

Master class No. 4: painting on ceramics and glass with markers

Drawing with markers and felt-tip pens is familiar to all of us from childhood. With the help of special markers for painting dishes with your own hands, you can quickly and easily decorate a ceramic plate with inscriptions, as well as depict a graphic and very detailed picture. We look at examples of such decor in the following selection of photos.

To work you will need:

  1. Any degreaser and cotton pads;
  2. Felt pens of different colors and thickness of the rod.

Painting technique

  • Before you start painting on dishes, do not forget to degrease the surface.
  • The main rule is to try to draw the lines and contours of the drawing with small, frequent strokes - this way you are less likely to make a mistake.
  • Also try to draw from the general to the specific.

  • Preliminarily outline the contours of the drawing; if necessary, use a template or stencil.
  • Most markers dry in 24 hours, do not require burning, and are dishwasher safe.

Video tutorial: stained glass painting on glass

And finally, it was the turn of stained glass plate painting. This is a slightly more complex technique for painting on dishes due to the paint itself - as already noted, stained glass paints are liquid, and therefore they are often used to fill contours. They are also more transparent, glossy and less durable than acrylic. If you want to use “stained glass” plates, then choose only water-based paints, and upon completion of work, bake the dishes in the oven at a temperature of 170 degrees. If you want to hang a painted dish on the wall, then you can choose non-solvent-based paints and, in this case, do not forget to purchase varnish to fix the design.

Today we will talk about one of the oldest species artistic arts– painting on wood. Intricate patterns, drawings, characters and scenes from literary works on tablets, trays, boxes and vases still look great in the interior of any room today.

Wood painting is a decorative and applied art that has a long history. Artistic painting on wood was done with bright colors. Painted souvenirs were passed down from generation to generation and were valued by growing youth. Today, wood painting is widely used in the production of furniture, dishes, toys, and musical instruments.

Types of painting on wood

There are many types of wood painting, different traditional techniques and schools. In Khokhloma painting alone there are several subtypes, depending on the type of ornament used!

Today we will look at the three most popular paintings - Khokhloma, Mezen and Gorodets, since they are the most popular and widely known. It is important to remember that besides them there are many other, no less wonderful types of painting: for example, Volkhov, Boretsk, Vladimir, etc.

1. Khokhloma.

This type of painting is an old Russian craft that originated in the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod around the 17th century.

Wooden utensils have always been held in high esteem in Rus', but untreated wood absorbs moisture and quickly becomes dirty. To avoid this, they began to coat the dishes with boiled linseed oil - drying oil, which covered the surface of a wooden object with an impenetrable film.

A distinctive feature of the technique is giving the product a golden shine without the use of gold.

Khokhloma takes its principle of gilding without gold from ancient icon painting techniques: in order to save money, the background of the icon was painted over with silver (and later with cheaper tin or aluminum), images of saints were applied, and then covered with linseed oil in several layers, drying each layer separately in an oven. Under the influence of temperature, the drying oil film acquired a golden hue and the silver background, located underneath it, also had a golden shimmer.

Basic colors in Khokhloma:

Red;

Gold;

Additional colors:

Green;

Khokhloma painting is done by hand, without preliminary marking. Traditional elements - juicy rowan and strawberries, flowers and branches. Birds, fish and animals are often found.

There are two types of painting: “mountain”, when a drawing in red and black is applied on a silver background (which will turn golden after firing!); and “under the background,” when the outline of the ornament is first outlined, and then the background is filled with black paint, but the design remains golden.

2. Gorodets painting.

This painting also appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod province, but later than Khokhloma - in the 19th century.

The subject compositions in this painting are much more complex, but the masters also applied them without preliminary markings.

Gorodets painting was done on a bright background with tempera paints.

The main painting technique is to first apply the background color to the product, then apply “underpainting” to it - large spots of color. After this, the drawing is worked out with a thin brush, then the painting is completed by “razhivka” - additional thin strokes and dots, usually applied with white paint, emphasizing details and contrast. Main motives - flower arrangements, fairy-tale and epic stories, urban scenes.

3. Mezen painting.

An ancient type of decorating wooden utensils and other household items. This painting is a purely ornamental decoration.

The main feature: a fractional pattern - stars, crosses, dashes - made in two colors: black and red.

The main motifs of geometric patterns are solar disks, rhombuses, and crosses. Also used as an ornament are schematic images of animals: horses or deer. All images are very static and only through repeated repetition does a feeling of dynamics arise.

The product is painted on clean, unprimed wood, first with red ocher, and then a black outline is made.

Where to start and how to paint on wood

Brushes for painting on wood

The best brushes for painting on wood are soft brushes of natural origin. Particularly valued are squirrel and kolinsky, and less commonly, sable. However, synthetic brushes are also perfect for acrylic paints.

Before the process, it is important to decide on the appropriate sizes for the brushes, which are indicated by numbers. For beginners, it is recommended to take one large, two medium and one thin small brush.

It is important to remember that all ancient trade paintings originated in the peasant class, in the hands of people to whom the plow and hammer were much more familiar than the brush. And if they could do it, so can you! In traditional paintings there is no need to draw faces, figures or maintain portrait likeness. The most important thing is to hone the technique of drawing different elements, learn to freely turn the brush in your hands and mix colors. You need to put in a little patience, drawing the same elements over and over again, and in the end you will learn to draw them perfectly! Quite a small number of simple basic elements and their combinations - that's all!

And it is important to understand that if recognized masters different types paintings could be applied without a preliminary drawing, then for us, mere mortals, we can apply the drawing not immediately with paints, but use a pencil, stencil, carbon paper or tracing paper to begin with, but not get too carried away. After all, if you constantly resort to ready-made drawings, the ability to independently fantasize is dulled. Remember, the main thing is to always enjoy the painting process.

Today it is very popular to decorate your homes with cute handmade items. Some types of such creativity are accessible only to experienced needlewomen, while others can be done even by a child. Such an accessible type is plate painting. There are many techniques for its implementation, and the result of the process will be a wonderful decorative item for decorating the kitchen or dining room.

Plates made of ceramics, glass, wood, and porcelain are suitable for painting. These can be either special products for decoration or ordinary, plain ones. The main thing is that there are no factory designs on the dishes.

Before you start work, it’s worth deciding on the technique, since there are several types:

You can draw with paints (acrylic, silicate, water-based) or permanent markers. Regardless of the complexity of the pattern on the plates, the order of work is usually the same:

Pique technique

You can paint a plate with your own hands using the pique technique. In this case, the pattern will be created by applying dots along a given contour. This technique allows you to achieve the effect of beadwork, embossing or even inlay with stasis or precious stones.

For work, it is best to take durable contour acrylic paints. When choosing them, it is worth checking that they are the right consistency - not too liquid and not too thick. They should be easy to squeeze out, but do not spread into a puddle.

If the selected paints are not in tubes, but in jars, then you can apply the dots with a thin brush, toothpick or needle.

After carrying out the preparatory work (degreasing, priming), you can immediately begin applying the dot pattern. If such work is being done for the first time, it is better to first make a stencil, sketch or marking, and also think in advance about the color scheme of the future painting. Very convenient to use template, which is attached to the back of the plate.

To get the painting of ceramic plates using the piqué technique right the first time, you should practice on paper - applying dots of the same size with equal spaces between them.

Tips for performing point to point:

Gzhel painting

Gzhel painting is a traditional elegant Russian painting in blue tones on products made of snow-white clay. To paint a plate in this style, you need to prepare blue acrylic paints of different tones and brushes of different thicknesses. In addition, the plate itself must be pure white.

Before you start painting, you can practice on paper. To begin, depict the simplest elements inherent in this style: dots, lines, strokes, grids, arcs, simple ornaments, borders, droplets.

An interesting technique - “brushstroke with shadow”, found in many products painted in the Gzhel style. To perform this you will need a wide brush (No. 10−12). To achieve the desired effect, you should correctly distribute the paint on the brush - there should be more paint on one side than on the other. Thanks to this, the stroke will be darker on one edge and lighter on the other.

To make painting easier, you can use a stencil, a drawing plate template, or make markings. From simple elements (dots, lines, droplets) you can create characteristic patterns in floral motifs (flowers, blades of grass).

Ideas for drawing with children

Creating a painted plate can serve as an excellent occasion for joint creativity with your child. The simplest, yet most effective and fun method is finger painting.

For example, you can depict a tree in this way. After degreasing the surface, you need to paint the trunk and branches of the tree with acrylic paint using a brush. Then coat the sponge with green (or any other) paint. Next, you need to touch the sponge with your fingertips and leave an imprint on the plate - each such imprint will represent a leaf.

Simple (child friendly) and sufficient quick way decorate the plate - apply a geometric pattern. To work, you will need masking tape, which must be glued to the surface, creating a simple geometric pattern (for example, a zigzag line).

Painting plates with your own hands - the master class offers you to get acquainted with various ways of decorating dishes and will interest you creative people who love to draw and decorate their home with homemade crafts. Decorative tableware can become original decoration, for example, in the kitchen. To create it, you don’t have to buy a special one; you can take an old or unnecessary plain plate and start being creative.

To paint plates used for their intended purpose, it is better to use baked or special paints for food utensils.

Easy lesson

It is better to paint plates in any style with acrylic paints, since they are the most resistant to external influences - water, sunlight, dust. In addition, they are convenient to work with, since their consistency resembles gouache and does not require additional funds for thinning and special brushes (for example, compared to oil and tempera).

To fix the paint and maintain brightness for a long time, it is recommended to coat it on top ready product special colorless acrylic varnish.

Painting a ceramic plate can be done using different techniques, it all depends on the skills, imagination and desire of the author.

Beginners and unconfident craftsmen are recommended to use stencils to accurately apply patterns. They can be downloaded, printed and cut out, or purchased from craft stores. Painting using this technique can be done either with paints using a brush or a cotton swab, or with a special marker.

This technique is well suited for children, as it does not require special drawing skills. All that is needed is to fix the stencil picture on the plate, for example, with tape, and paint over the “empty” places.

A simple but elegant dot painting is done with contour paints, which are sold in tubes and do not require dilution. The tubes are equipped with spouts, which makes the job of applying dots and fine lines much easier.

For painting using dot technique you will need:

  • plain ceramic plate (preferably white);
  • degreasing agent (alcohol, nail polish remover);
  • contour paints;
  • sample;
  • carbon paper or soft pencil;
  • brushes;
  • palette;
  • acrylic lacquer.

Progress:

  1. Wipe the plate with alcohol or another product. You can use a cotton pad for this;

  1. Using carbon paper, transfer the design onto the dishes. To do this, combine it with carbon paper, secure it on a plate and trace the lines with a pencil. You can also make a homemade carbon copy by painting over the back of the drawing;

  1. Pressing on the tube, apply a contour at equal distances. Their diameter depends on the pressure applied. As a rule, large points are made on the main lines (large parts) first, and then small ones. The result should be patterned “lines” consisting of dots;

  1. After the pattern is completed, the product must be dried naturally for 24 hours. If desired, the finished painted plate can be varnished.

Both ceramics and glass are well suited for such painting. You can first paint the plate with paints, make a background or draw a plot picture, and then additionally process the lines with contour paints, highlighting the necessary details.

It is more convenient to secure the design on a glass plate with tape on the outside or inside, depending on the purpose of the dish.

If the plate is going to be used as a decoration, then the side where the paint is applied does not matter. To use the plate for its intended purpose, it is better to apply paint with outside and fix the picture from the inside.

Wooden plates are also painted with acrylic and then varnished. As a rule, people do not eat from such dishes, so they can become an excellent wall decoration, and can also be used for fruit (painted wooden dishes).

Perhaps many people associate wooden utensils - plates and spoons - with folk painting, for example, with Khokhloma or Gorodets. Master folk painting won't be difficult. The main thing is to understand the basic principle of each painting, its “zest”.

Vintage technology

Khokhloma painting can be used to cover not only plates, but also bowls and boxes.

You need to prepare:

  • wooden plate;
  • Khokhloma pattern;
  • golden, black, red paints;
  • brushes;
  • sandpaper;
  • pencil;

Progress:

  1. Sand the surface of the plate and cover it with gold or black paint;
  1. Transfer the design with patterns to a plate (it should look like the photo below);

  1. Based on the sample, paint the drawing with black and red paint with a thin brush;

The master began work by beating the baclush - he prepared wooden blocks (baklushi) from linden, aspen or birch. Wooden spoons and ladles, cups and salt shakers were made from them. Dishes not yet decorated with painting were called linen. The linen was primed and dried several times, and then painted in yellow, red and black tones. Popular motifs were floral patterns, flowers, berries, and lace branches. Forest birds on Khokhloma dishes reminded the peasants of the Firebird from Russian fairy tales; they said: “The Firebird flew past the house and touched the bowl with its wing, and the bowl became golden.”.

After applying the design, the product was coated with drying oil two or three times, tin or aluminum powder was rubbed into the surface and dried in an oven. After hardening with heat, they acquired a honey hue and really shone like gold.

At the beginning of the 18th century, dishes began to be brought to the Makaryevskaya Fair, where sellers and buyers from all over Russia gathered. Khokhloma products turned out to be known throughout the country. Since the 19th century, when guests from all over Europe and Asia began to come to the Nizhny Novgorod fair, painted dishes have appeared in many parts of the world. Russian merchants sold products in India and Turkey.

Gzhel clay has been known since the time of Ivan Kalita - since the 14th century. Local craftsmen used it to create “vessels for apothecary needs,” dishes and children’s toys. At the beginning of the 19th century, factories appeared in the Gzhel volost that produced porcelain. The first enterprise here was founded in 1810 by merchant Pavel Kulichkov. At first, painting on porcelain dishes was colored, but mid-19th century, the fashion for blue and white Dutch tiles and Chinese porcelain of the same shades came to Russia. Soon, blue patterns on a snowy background became a distinctive feature of Gzhel painting.

To check the quality of porcelain, before painting, the product was dipped in magenta, a red aniline dye. The porcelain was painted an even pink color, and any crack was visible on it. The masters painted with cobalt paint - before firing it looks black. Using special techniques, working only with a brush and paint, the artists created more than 20 shades of blue.

Gzhel subjects are lush roses (they were called “agashkas” here), winter landscapes, scenes from folk tales. Children are sledding, Emelya is catching pike in the pond, villagers are celebrating Maslenitsa... After applying the design, the dishes were covered with glaze and fired. Pink products with black patterns took on their traditional look.
