Sanding paper, grit 40 25. Sanding paper (sanding paper). paper-based sandpaper

Sandpaper is an abrasive material applied to a fabric or paper base and is an indispensable assistant for a wide range of home craftsman projects.

Let's look at the symbols with which the manufacturer informs us about the types of sandpaper and the permissible areas of its use.

Sandpaper grit

This parameter of abrasive paper displays the number and size of particles of abrasive substance per unit area, is the main characteristic of the sandpaper and determines the possibility of its use for certain needs.

What's the difficulty?

Today in stores you can find sanding paper labeled as Russian GOST as well as the standards of other countries.

The confusion is that domestic markings on the skin can be done in a new way GOST from 2005(focused on European standards) and according to GOST 80s years approved by the Ministry of Machine Tool and Tool Industry USSR.

The two categories of standards are inverse. IN old GOST 3647-80 decreasing marking numbers indicated decreasing grain size. IN new GOST The abrasive grain decreases, and the number in the marking, on the contrary, increases.

In addition, there is no unity among global manufacturers. The USA and Canada, Europe and Türkiye, Japan, China adhere to their own standard.

Russian marking. GOST old and new (ISO)

New GOST

The letter is always listed first "R". The number after indicates the grain size.

For example: P400- this is the well-known “zero”.

Old GOST

The first number is the number indicating the size of the abrasive. Next are the indices: P means that the amount of the main fraction of abrasive grain is not less than 55% , index N- no less 45% , index D- no less 41% .

8-P indicates that the number of abrasive granules that pass through the sieve with the mesh side 80 µm. no less 55% .

To designate micro-grinding powders in the old GOST the letter comes first M. The number behind it is the grain size in microns.

For example, the same “zero”: M40

This is what the back side of the sandpaper I purchased just yesterday looks like:

(Below I posted a photo with the new markings)

Areas of application of abrasive skins in accordance with the type of grain size.

It is also useful to understand what types of sandpaper are divided into in addition to the size of the abrasive grain and how this affects its functionality and cost.

Abrasive material

I wasn’t too lazy to photograph the underside of the skin of which birdhouse processed.

Line resin bonded- abrasive material, grinding material (according to the English - Russian dictionary of mechanical engineering and production automation)

If you look at the back of your sandpaper, you will most likely see a similar simple inscription aluminum oxide what does aluminum oxide mean? in common parlance, electrocorundum). A possible option is silicon carbide or ceramic abrasive.

The first is a brittle material and is used for processing wood, alloy steel, and cast iron.

Second ( silicon carbide) has high hardness and is designed to work with glass, plastic, and metal.

As a rule, this knowledge is enough for the general consumer to do housework, but we general development We suggest covering the topic more broadly:

Areas of application of abrasives according to the type of abrasive material

Electrocorundum normal(93-96% Al 2 O 3 - for example 16A) such skins are intended for malleable cast iron, hardened and non-hardened steels, and wood.

    Electrocorundum white(Al 2 O 3 no more than 99% - for example 25A) - for processing heat-resistant and alloy steels.

Silicon carbide(for example 64C) - finishing processing of metal, cast iron, bronze, aluminum, plastic, marble, granite, glass, wood.

Flint(for example 81K) - for processing wood, plywood, leather.

Glass(for example 71C) - for processing wood, plywood, felt, felt.

Pomegranate- for processing hard deciduous wood (oak, beech, etc.).

Elbor- for polishing precision surfaces and hard-to-machine steel parts.

Diamond- for polishing and fine honing of precision parts made of carbide and cast iron.

Type of sandpaper base

1. paper-based sandpaper

This sandpaper has a fairly low wear resistance coefficient. Along with a low safety margin, paper-based emery, as a rule, does not have water-resistant properties.

P1, P2, PZ... before PI- non-waterproof paper.

This greatly narrows the scope of application, but also reduces the market value.

2. cloth sandpaper

Today, the most common base fabrics are cotton and polyester. Fabric-based abrasives most often have water-resistant properties due to a special resin-based impregnation.

L1, L2 And M- moisture-resistant paper.

Such sandpapers have a higher safety margin compared to paper ones.

In the marking with the first digit, the manufacturer can indicate 1 or 2 .

1 - the sandpaper is intended for materials of low hardness (putty, primer, paint, enamel, soft wood, plastic)

2 - for hard metal alloys.

There is also sandpaper with a mixed base (fabric + paper) or other materials (for example, fiber-based discs are widespread).

Type of abrasive application

1. sandpaper with a semi-open or open abrasive layer

The base is half closed. The gaps between the particles are covered 40 to 60% base area. This abrasive is used for processing soft and friable materials.

No lumps are formed during operation, which prevents clogging of empty spaces with waste.

2. sandpaper with a closed or continuous abrasive layer

It is characterized by complete coverage of the base with abrasive material and is designed for use on hard surfaces.

Full explanation of sandpaper markings

So, we already understand something and can try to read what the manufacturer had in mind.

For example, this marking ( old GOST)

Example: 2 830x50 S2G 24A 40-NMA GOST 5009-82.

Abrasive for processing hard metal alloys ( 2 ), on a roll ( 830 mm at 50 m) on a fabric basis - twill ( S2G), from electrocorundum ( 24A), with a grain size of 40 µm ( 40-N), on hide glue ( M).

Explanation

Binder type: M— flesh glue; WITH— synthetic resin; TO- combined ligament.

In the old GOST, the sixth letter indicated the class of the abrasive - the number of defects. A no more 0,5% ; B- no more 2% ; IN- no more 3% .

Therefore, the number of defects ( A) on the working surface of our example no more 0,5% .

or (new European standard using German VSM sandpaper as an example)

Example: KK X P150

Electrocorundum abrasive ( K) on fabric ( TO) and hard ( X) basis with grain P150(75-106 microns).

b) symbol sanding paper (without designation of type, type, size);

c) batch number.

Notes

2.1. (Deleted, Amendment No. 1).

2. On a two-layer sandpaper, the grain size of the bottom layer should be indicated. For example, when making a two-layer skin with a grain size of 40-N/25-P, the grain size of the bottom layer is indicated as 40-N.

(Changed edition, Amendment No. 1, 3).

5.2. Winding the sanding paper into rolls should be tight and even, preventing the formation of wrinkles, folds and crumpled areas.

The end surface must be smooth, the projections of the edges must not exceed 20 mm. When installing the roll at the end, the protruding edges should not be wrinkled by more than 7 mm.

5.3. Rolls of sanding paper must be wrapped in paper in accordance with GOST 8273 and GOST 2228 or other packaging materials. Layers of packaging paper must reliably cover the ends of the rolls and ensure the preservation of the rolls of skins during transportation.

(Changed edition, Amendment No. 3).

5.4. The packaged roll must be labeled or stamped with clearly marked information:

a) trademark of the manufacturer;

b) symbol of the sanding paper;

c) release date and batch number;

d) technical control stamp.

Note. A roll of sanding paper made using YAN-153 varnish or similar materials must be affixed with a label indicating storage and transportation conditions.

5.5-5.11. (Excluded, Amendment No. 3).

5.12. Other requirements for labeling and packaging, as well as transportation and storage, are in accordance with GOST 27595.

(Introduced additionally, Amendment No. 3).

Section 6. (Deleted, Amendment No. 3).

APPENDIX 1 Mandatory

METHOD FOR DETERMINING CUTTING ABILITY, INDICATORS OF STRENGTH OF ABRASIVE GRAINS AND WATER RESISTANCE COEFFICIENT 1 2 3

1. Equipment and materials

1.1. Device for testing PSSh-3.

1.2. Technical scales with a weighing error of no more than 0.01 g.

1.3. Samples of sanding paper 680 mm long and 20 mm wide.

1.4. A rod made of calibrated steel grade 45 according to GOST 1051 with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 250-300 mm.

(Changed edition, Amendment No. 1).

2. Preparation for the test

2.1. Edge and weigh a sample of abrasive paper.

2.2. Attach a sample of sanding paper to a metal disk with a diameter of 100 mm and the sanding rod in the chuck holder.

The grinding rod must be inclined in the opposite direction of the rotation of the disk so that the end of the rod is flat after grinding. For this purpose, grinding is carried out with 12-grain sandpaper from normal electrocorundum for 15 s at a radial load of 19.6 N, a rod rotation speed of 36 min -1, and a grinding speed of 15 m/s.

2.1, 2.2. (Changed edition, Amendment No. 1).

3. Carrying out the test

3.1. Set the test modes indicated in the table.

(Changed edition, Amendment No. 3).

3.2. Perform grinding.

3.3. Measure the length of the ground section of the rod with a caliper with an error of 0.05 mm.

3.4. Cool the rod to room temperature or replace it with another one.

3.5. Repeat operations according to paragraphs. 3.2-3.4 until the durability criterion of the abrasive paper is reached in accordance with the table.

3.2-3.5. (Changed edition, Amendment No. I).

3.6. Remove and weigh a sample of abrasive paper.

4. Processing of test results

4.1. Cutting ability Q, mm 3 /min, is determined by the formula

Q --- ,

where q x is the length of the ground reference rod per 1st cycle grinding, mm;

D - duration of the grinding cycle, s.

4.2. The indicator of the strength of fixation of abrasive grains of sandpaper /G, mm/g, is determined by the formula

length of ground reference rod, mm; number of cycles until durability criterion is achieved; difference in mass of the sanding paper sample before and after testing, g.

where q x - n - D-

4.3. The cutting ability and index of fastening strength of abrasive grains are determined as the arithmetic average of three tests.

4.1-4.3. (Changed edition, Amendment No. 1).

4.4. The water resistance coefficient is determined by testing a dry sandpaper sample and a sandpaper sample kept in water at a temperature of (60±3) C for 2 hours.

(Introduced additionally, Amendment No. 1).
