What is the design on plates called? Painting on ceramics: master class, tips and ideas. Foreign manufacturers of acrylic paints

MK “glass painting” I hope you like it and you learn something new!

For work we will need:

Glass plate, paints for glass and ceramics, outlines for glass, alcohol (or alcohol-based product) template.

I'm starting by finding an interesting template for painting! Of course, you can sit and think about the drawing yourself, but I took the easy way! I copied the template from the computer. (by the way, here is a site with interesting templates of stylized flowers)
It's better to trace the plate first and then draw!

full size

You can also take paper napkin with an interesting pattern and place it under a plate - you will get a wonderful replacement for the template

Now wipe the plate with alcohol (or vodka, or an alcohol-containing solution)
We place the template under the plate - it is better to use 2 identical plates, and lay the template between them - this way it will be fixed and fit snugly to the plate

Let's start outlining the drawing - it will prevent the paint from spreading all over the plate! It is important here that your hands lie comfortably so that the line runs smoothly. To begin with, it is better to practice the outline on paper, and only then move on to the selected surface. If something doesn’t work out, don’t worry, you can immediately wipe it with a cotton swab dipped in water, then wipe the area.
(characteristics of the contours can be read here http://www.golandart.ru/mat2.html)

Let the contour dry, ideally 2-3 hours, but if you are in a hurry, you can dry it with a hairdryer!

We fill our outline with glass paint, take our time, and help in hard-to-reach places with a brush or toothpick! Do not cover all areas at once, so that your paint does not accidentally come out and mix with the paint on the adjacent area.

A lot depends on the colors, because there are different colors! Characteristics of paints can be found here http://www.golandart.ru/mat1.html
Let the plate dry, because... I have stained glass paints, so 4-5 hours will be enough.

The plate can then be coated with acrylic varnish, or you can leave it as is.
Such a plate will wonderful decoration interior or a gift for family and friends.

BUT, in addition to the plate itself for painting and paints, I needed: glass cleaner to degrease the plate, a stained glass contour on the glass, brushes, a sheet of paper with a printed design, tape to attach the sheet with the butterfly to the plate, scissors and a pencil.

First, of course, I practiced and tried to paint glass jars and bottles that can always be found at home. And then I came across a transparent 30×30 square plate. I decided to depict something bright and joyful on it! Let it be a butterfly! No sooner said than done!

I found a suitable design, copied it, attached it to the back of the plate and it began!!!

First I traced it with a stained glass outline on the glass and ceramics, and then filled in the colorful pieces with stained glass paint. I made a blot and quickly stretched it over the desired area to be painted with a brush...

In this work on the plate I also used the dot technique. The butterfly looked rustic on plain clear glass! Therefore, I applied a matte background (Ultra frost effect paint for glass), tapping foam rubber over all areas of the glass on the plate where there was no pattern. When I finished with the background, I realized that my butterfly was very lonely alone. Then I added colored transparent “scraps” along the edge of the plate. It turned out very bright and pretty. Then I outlined and connected all these bright inserts with one line using the dot technique and the plate is ready. In my opinion - not bad, but what do you think about this?

Ordinary boring dishes sold in chain stores can easily be turned into designer sets. For this you only need a little acrylic paints, brushes and, of course, inspiration. Let's try to master painting on ceramics, and our master class will help you quickly master this activity.

Ceramics is one of the simplest materials for painting. Special acrylic paints are usually used to apply patterns, but contours and various three-dimensional adhesives can also be used to create volumetric images or special markers. If the cookware will not be used in its own way direct purpose, but it will just stand on the shelf, then the design can be applied even with ordinary gouache or even nail polish.

For “Painting with stains” you will need:
  • white or light ceramic mug
  • nail polish remover or acetone
  • cotton pads and swabs (for degreasing the surface and correcting the pattern)
  • 2-3 bottles of nail polish (even old and thickened ones can be used)
  • any container with warm water (for example, an ordinary plastic container)
  • toothpicks
  • napkins
Master class “Painting with stains”:

1) The surface of the mug must be thoroughly washed and wiped with nail polish remover or acetone.

2) Add nail polish to a container with warm water. The color of our product will depend on its quantity: the more varnish, the richer the pattern will be. If you are using several colors of varnish, add the second one after the first one, then the third one.

3) Use a toothpick to gently stir the resulting mixture.

4) We lower the cup into the container with the mixture - the surface of the product will instantly begin to be covered with drawings with watercolor stains. Please note that the top edge of the mug should remain unpainted.

5)The drawing can be corrected using nail polish remover and cotton swabs. Leave the workpiece to dry for three hours.

6) If desired, the dried drawing can be supplemented with patterns made with contour paints, sparkles, etc. A stylish cup is ready to take its place of honor on the dining table! To prevent damage to the design, such products should only be washed by hand, and also do not put such dishes in a microwave oven.

You can decorate not only mugs yourself, but also other utensils, such as plates. The art of dot technique requires more time and effort than “painting with stains,” but the result is worth it.

To dot painting a plate you will need:
  • plain ceramic plate
  • squared notebook paper or graph paper
  • scotch
  • scissors
  • acrylic paints - it is best to use a special contour, because... it has a denser texture and is convenient to squeeze out of the tube drop by drop
  • brushes

After varnishing, we will have a decorative plate; we will no longer be able to eat from it. If you want to use it in the kitchen, then you need to choose special acrylic paints for baking; you don’t need varnish for them.

Master Class " Spot painting dishes":

1) The plate must be washed thoroughly, then thoroughly dry the surface and degrease it - wipe with acetone or nail polish remover.

2) Now we need to choose the pattern that we will apply to the glass. Beginners can take inspiration from examples on the World Wide Web or use the pictures from this master class.

3) We make stencils out of paper and glue them onto a plate with tape. Experienced craftsmen may not use any templates, but draw straight from their heads, but in order for the pattern to be neat and symmetrical, it is better to play it safe.

4) First you need to practice a little the technique of applying dots on the draft, and you can start painting.

5) We continue to paint the plate with acrylic paints, adding new colors and making additional types stencils if necessary.

6) If you see that some point looks “crooked”, you can immediately correct it with a dry cotton swab. If the paint has already hardened, you will have to use a stick soaked in solvent. For particularly fine points, you can use toothpicks.

7) Our hand-painted plate is ready!

And, of course, one cannot ignore dishes decorated in the traditional style: Khokhloma, Gzhel, Zhostovo... Such images look more like real paintings than ordinary patterns, so it’s better to start with them already having experience in painting on ceramics.

To paint a plate using the Gzhel technique you will need:
  • white ceramic plate
  • simple pencil
  • acetone (can be replaced with nail polish remover)
  • acrylic blue and white paints
  • brushes
Master class “Painting plates using the Gzhel technique”:

1) Thoroughly wash and degrease the surface of the ceramic plate.

2) Using a simple pencil, sketch a drawing - flowers, leaves, fairy-tale birds.

3) After practicing on paper, we begin painting in the Gzhel style, combining dark blue and light blue strokes.

4) Let the paint dry. Ready! The painted plate can be coated with a special glaze to secure the design.

Video on the topic of the article

For greater clarity, we suggest watching the following videos, which demonstrate the process of artistic painting on ceramics in stages.

Clay household items are usually not painted. Painting on ceramics is not often done even in places where pottery crafts and a lot of crafts made from poured and non-dusted clay are concentrated. We mean artistic painting in the broad sense of the word, ignoring the artisanal and amateurish “painting” that occurs every hour.

An important reason for the rare painting of clay vessels is the significant complexity of this work. It requires special paints and firing in muffle furnaces. In addition, special knowledge is needed regarding the nomenclature of paint shades, since most paint materials change colors after firing; painting on ceramics with simpler paints without firing was not used at all.

There are many varieties of commonly used clay and ceramic objects that it is absolutely necessary to produce useful and pleasing to the eye, so that they also usefully serve as decoration for the house if its inhabitants love everything elegant, but do not have the opportunity to spend money on real beauty. It is even more important to give the opportunity to purchase something made with taste to a person who is indifferent to art.

Studying the variety of vessel shapes is not our task, but we draw the attention of masters related to pottery production that it is useful to improve the shapes of products and make them as diverse as possible. If variety is difficult, then changing the form is absolutely not difficult, because beauty does not require pretentiousness of form. We know from ancient examples that truly beautiful things have been simple in form since ancient times. Can simple forms be difficult to execute? No, but how much more beautiful they are than our jars, jugs and mugs made from similar ceramics.

Now let’s touch on common popular and cheap clay products that women and children most often encounter: flower pots, dough cups, water jugs, salt shakers, dishes, plates. It is impossible to doubt the fact that the improved form and high-quality decorative effect of these things will develop the taste of women and teach children from an early age to understand the beauty of lines and colors. This suggests the idea that, with appropriate organization and initiative, painting pottery would be a useful and surprisingly entertaining activity. But on condition that the management of the art workshop will be led by truly artists and people who understand how to develop the taste of the masses, how to gradually develop this serious question, comprehensively thinking through each work released to the market.

The thoughts expressed above are not supported by the desire to turn the interest of pottery exclusively to ancient examples. On the contrary, among handicraft pottery, very nice and modestly shaped clay products are often observed. But we are not talking about them - the conversation entirely relates to the gross market distortion of all creativity with which stores are filled. Low-quality, cheap products - the property of a wide range of consumers - clearly harm the development of taste and the perception of beauty.

Paints for painting ceramics and clay

Any types of paints that are not afraid of cold and hot water are suitable: oil paints, colored silver, multi-colored varnishes, relief pastes, powders.

What paints are especially good for painting ceramics and clay?

Of course, enamel. Enamels adhere perfectly to clay, are most durable on poured clay, and have an attractive soft sheen. Their tones are gentle, fresh, varied. Oil paints come next in beauty and durability, but oil is rougher. Oil paint It is unthinkable to achieve the original look of “enamel products,” especially if the painting is subtle and the design is interesting. The third place is occupied by colored silver, elegant and original, although inferior in strength to the first two.

Painting on ceramics almost always requires painting the background. A correctly selected background highlights and enhances the beauty of almost every design, but most importantly, it hides the cheapness of the material, which is sometimes uneven and poorly cast. The following backgrounds are suitable for enamel paints: black, white, yellow, terracotta, deep blue. These tones are preferable for drawing silhouettes, flowers, and ornaments.

Due to their natural transparency, colored varnishes require an ideal background environment. For colored varnishes, a shiny background lining (gold, silver) is interesting. When painting with varnishes, it is preferable to cover the background with enamel paint, oil paint, or leave it natural. However, varnishes are inferior in strength to enamel and oil.

Relief pastes are equal to enamel and even higher in strength and beauty of tones in ceramic painting, but relief pastes work less quickly. Relief paints dry much slower than enamel paints, not to mention their cost. With relief pastes and powders it is easy to imitate all kinds of antiquities and ancient utensils. The imitation is done in this way: a gold or silver base is sprinkled in some places with white diamonds, then painted with multi-colored varnishes to resemble precious stones.

From relief paste it is not difficult to obtain a typical antique setting of semi-precious stones by pressing a convex strand of paste around the cabochons to give them the appropriate shape of an antique setting.

What designs are the most beautiful on vessels?

Drawings can be very diverse, ranging from elementary ornaments, flowers or fruits, to complex landscapes or genres (paintings involving human figures). For beginners, it is easier to use simple drawings for painting on ceramics: light ornaments, berries, flowers, water plants. A very easy-to-execute design would be perfect: horizontal wavy lines depicting a water surface, a few reeds of reeds, two or two water lilies. Against the white background of the vessels, the winter drawings are remarkable and very simple: to depict snow White background Here and there it is slightly painted over with a light gray color.

Antique silhouettes look very aesthetically pleasing on a terracotta, black, yellow background and even on the natural color of the material. Silhouettes are created using oil, enamel, and relief paints, and relief pastes are used only with a brush. You can’t paint silhouettes with colored silver - it will look tawdry and rude. Chinese and Japanese styles are interesting on vessels, but both require great subtlety in work and are recommended only to fairly experienced artists.

The work turns out to be inimitably beautiful and rich if the background is covered with the finest gold mesh under cloazonet (pieces of enamel are enclosed in thin flat copper rims, similar to the contours of the picture). The cloazone technique is very difficult, slow, and expensive. It is almost impossible to make gold threads of the cloazone technology with a brush; they must be thin and even. It is possible to create a mesh manually only with a good tube, trying to draw the volumetric line of the relief paste as flat as possible, for which the tube should be held vertically to the line it leads. For cloazonet work, white, black or blue backgrounds are preferably suitable, as they highlight gold better. In addition to metallized coatings for ancient expensive vessels, you can make background linings from powders alone, for example, mother-of-pearl.

The following tones are successfully combined with steel shades: blue, crimson, light blue, lilac, orange. With gold and silver shades, which are used not for imitations, but for ordinary vessels, it is recommended to work with extreme caution so as not to fall into tinsel and leafiness.

To paint on ceramics you will need:

  • paints for ceramics (depending on the company and type, they either require baking during high temperature, or they can simply be left to dry, or they need to be varnished);
  • contour on ceramics (colorless or colors of your choice. An interesting effect can be achieved by a contour contrasting with the colors of the painting itself; and a strictly black contour will help to create a drawing in the style of pop art or even a scene from a cartoon or comic book, where a thin black line of stroke is often necessary) ;
  • the object that you will paint (make sure that it is ceramic and not plastic disguised as it - this is especially important if you bake the painted object in the oven. The plastic may melt);
  • acetone (for degreasing);
  • varnish for fixing;
  • cotton pads or cotton wool;
  • brushes of different thicknesses;
  • paper and pencils (plain, soft - preferably 2-3B) for the sketch.

How to paint ceramics:

Whatever design you choose for painting, in order to apply it and end up with a beautiful ceramic product, you first need to prepare its surface. Apply a little acetone to a cotton pad or cotton wool and wipe the ceramic thoroughly. It must be low fat.

After degreasing, try not to touch the surface you will paint with your fingers without gloves - human skin is covered on the outside with an insignificant, imperceptible layer of fat necessary for interaction with environment, but this will be enough for the paints: they will apply worse or not at all.

For some paints, the surface after degreasing is also primed with special mixtures, but this is not always necessary. Paints will stick better on porous ceramics; on glossy ones, you will need to finally seal them with ceramic varnish.

Make a sketch on paper, transfer it to the product, and then dry it as stated in the instructions for your paints - use a hair dryer, just leave it on the duck, bake in the oven; this varies depending on the paints. Then coat, if necessary, with varnish.

If the product needed to be baked, then be sure to ventilate the room after opening the oven, especially if you are going to cook in the same oven. The smell may not be noticeable, but it will remain until aired.

Sketches for ceramics

You can draw anything on a plate, cup or dish, but the most popular motifs are, of course, ornaments. One way or another, elements on round surfaces are usually repeated, forming a chain - it consists of colors or Batman profiles, it doesn’t matter. Trace your item on paper, and then distribute the pattern on this blank. For example, these could be grape brushes or monochrome fairy-tale flowers.

Grapes on a plate

For the grape brushes with leaves, use green, yellow and purple paints, as well as a silver outline. Arrange three brushes, consisting of 10-15 grape circles, in a triangle, and fill the space between them along the edge with two leaves in each gap. Add green curly tendrils and outline everything.

Black and white flowers

They can paint any ceramic products. There is no need to achieve resemblance to real flowers, just follow your taste. Such flowers usually do not have leaves, they stand on tall thin legs and look like either peonies or dandelions. Use thin, strict lines, “fill” the petals not with color, but with patterns, and place the flowers not close to each other, as if they were growing in natural conditions. Be sure to add black dots around the flowers - they will look like either dandelion seeds or small fairy lights.
